CARD Calls for an End to Violence Citing Horrific Violations of Rights in Guji Zones
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - June 15, 2024 - The Center for the Advancement of Rights and Democracy (CARD) is calling for an immediate end to violence and accountability for perpetrators of human rights violations and abuses following the publication of a report that compiles 36 horrific human rights violation case stories in Guji and West Guji zones of Oromia.
For years, the Guji zones in Oromia have been embroiled in conflict between armed rebels and government security forces. CARD's report, titled "Voice for Guji: Grave Human Rights Situation in Oromia's Guji Zones" paints a grim picture of the impact this violence has had on civilians. The documented cases that are presented in three languages (English, Amharic, and Afaan Oromoo) detail incidents of extrajudicial killings, arbitrary and mass detention, gender-based violence, destruction of property, forced disappearances and extortion, torture, inhumane treatment, and displacement.
"These accounts expose the devastating consequences of the conflict," said Befekadu Hailu, Director of CARD. "Innocent people are caught in the crossfire, and their basic rights are being violated with impunity."
The subsequent call for peace and accountability during the launching event highlights the yearning for peace and normalcy among residents of the Guji zones. It emphasizes their desire for justice and the opportunity to rebuild their lives after suffering physical and psychological trauma.
CARD's call for action extends beyond the Guji zones. The Center acknowledges the widespread nature of the violence in Ethiopia, referencing the situation in Tigray even after ceasefire, ongoing violence in the Western Oromia, Amhara, and Benishangul-Gumuz regions. These violence emphasizes the need for nationwide solutions to ensure peace, justice, and accountability for all Ethiopians.
The report serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of violent conflict. It urges all stakeholders, including armed groups and the Ethiopian government, to commit to an immediate ceasefire and engage in genuine, inclusive negotiations to find lasting solutions. Only through a collective commitment to peace and accountability can Ethiopia heal and move towards a brighter future.
