CARD Hosted a Consultation Meeting on Ethiopia’s Draft Bill of Anti Hate Speech Law

Consultation_meetingCARD has hosted a consultation meeting among Ethiopian online content producers on the 14th of December 2019 at the Intercontinental Hotel. The meeting was also attended by representatives from the House of People’s Representatives and the Federal Attorney General of Ethiopia.

Mesenbet Assefa (Ph.D.), a professor at Addis Ababa University,  has made a presentation on the global context of freedom of expression as well as legitimate restrictions on the freedom of speech. Following the presentation, the participants raised issues that are concerning them the draft bill of anti-hate speech and prevention as well as suppression of false information.

Representatives of the House of People’s Representatives and the Federal Attorney General promised to reflect on the comments given by the Internet Content Producers over the draft bill. Most of the participants said that they do not trust the motive of the proposed law.
