Research Report Launch: Gadaa System and Women’s Rights

Center for Advancement of Rights and Democracy (CARD) is a board-led, for-not-profit organization registered in Ethiopia under the revised Civil Societies Law 1113/2019 with registry number 4307. CARD envisions a democratic Ethiopia and has a mission of echoing principles of democracy to make it the only rule of the game in Ethiopia.
CARD is an organization that follows a rights-centered approach to help the democratization process in Ethiopia. CARD is currently working on programs including youth and women empowerment, media literacy, civic engagement, and digital rights. To this end, it has targeted the youth and women in general; specifically, CARD targets media practitioners, online content producers, youth leaders, and activists.
The range of its activities is from awareness creation to advocacy.
As part of its youth and women empowerment program, CARD has launched an annual research fellowship named after the renowned women’s rights legend, Yeqaqe Werdwet, in the history of Guraghe people of Ethiopia. CARD’s Werdwet Research Fellowship has taken two fellows in 2020. Eyerusalm Belay did her research on the role of periodic religious gatherings as psychosocial and economic empowerment means. Muluken K. Amid, similarly, did his in-depth research on the “Gadaa System and Women’s Rights”
