Mentoring of CARD Management and Staff in Management and Leadership
Background
The Center for the Advancement of Rights and Democracy (CARD) is a board-led, not for profit organization registered in Ethiopia under Civil Societies Law 1113/2019 with registry number 4307. CARD aspires to see Ethiopia as a place where human rights are respected and democratic culture flourishes and its mission is to work for the advancement of a conducive civic, media and digital space to the respect of human rights and the promotion of democratic culture in Ethiopia.
Over the past five years, CARD has made significant strides in its scope, reach, influence, and the quality of its interventions in peacebuilding, human rights, and democratization. Its partnership base with international development and local implementing partners has grown. Its scope of engagement with different stakeholders including like-minded civil society organizations, grass-root initiatives, the media and democratic institutions has widened as an indicator of the trust, influence and legacy it has developed.
While CARD has made significant progress in promoting democratic culture and advancing civic, media, and digital spaces, it realizes the need to keep this momentum and maintain its status as a credible partner. In response to this recognition, CARD would like to engage a consultant to provide the services of mentoring the relevant management and middle-level staff towards capacitating them in management and leadership areas. Below are the details of this assignment.
Objectives of the Assignment
Overall Objective
The overall objective of this assignment is to enhance CARD’s capacity to increase its influence and effectiveness in Ethiopia with respect to its strategic focus areas. This can be achieved through empowering its senior management and middle-level staff by equipping them with the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence in leadership and management.
Specific Objectives and Deliverables
The specific objectives of the assignment are:
- To enhance CARD’s capacity to deal with high-level engagements and negotiations towards the promotion and attainment of its strategic objectives,
- To increase senior management team members’ capacity to lead and coordinate CARD’s team towards promoting human rights, democratization and peace,
- To help CARD promote the diversity of its team in general and in the senior management team specifically by guiding female staff on leadership and management skills.
Methodology
The consultant may determine the specific approaches and methodology early in the process of mentoring. For this assignment, the consultant could make use of available relevant documents in CARD. Based on the observations, it is possible to proceed and deliver the assignment and achieve the objectives. While the detail methods and activities are to be agreed based on the inception report, it is possible for the consultant to consider the methods below:
- Individual Face-to-Face Consultations
- Remote Guidance
- Learning and Experience Sharing Sessions in Groups
- Attending Internal Meetings for Observation
MANAGEMENT OF THE ASSIGNMENT
The indicative start date for this assignment is 15 Oct. 2024.
The total number of Expert Days required for this assignment are eighteen, as follows:
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum required qualifications, experience and skills:
- At least a master’s degree in CSO Leadership, Capacity Development, Human Rights, Law, Policy, Governance, Development Studies, Sociology, Economics, Political Science or related fields
- Up to date knowledge of latest developments in the civil society sector and human rights movements nationally and internationally,
- At least 15 years of working experience with or within national and international Human Rights Organizations,
- Out of the above, at least 10 years in leading the organizations,
- Demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, facilitation and presentation skills
- Fluency in written and spoken Amharic and English.
Preferred qualifications and skills:
- Experience of working in sub-Saharan Africa and preferably Ethiopian context in similar assignments
- Previous experience in donor-supported projects
