CARD Marks Milestone Anniversary and Welcomes New Leadership
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - July 27, 2024 – The Center for the Advancement of Rights and Democracy (CARD) commemorated its fifth anniversary with a celebratory event at the Hilton Hotel, Addis Ababa. The occasion was marked by a reflection on CARD's achievements, an acknowledgement of challenges overcome, and the introduction of new leadership to guide the organization's future endeavors.
CARD was founded in 2019 with a resolute mission to cultivate a safe and vibrant civic, media, and digital space in Ethiopia – a space where human rights are protected and democratic mass culture flourishes. Over the past five years, the organization has made significant strides towards this goal, launching impactful initiatives across four core program areas:
- Civic Engagement: Building constituency for human rights and democracy through projects like the New Generation of Human Rights Defenders, the Werdwet Research Fellowship, and institutionalizing activism efforts.
- Media Space Advancement: Empowering media practitioners and promoting professional standards through initiatives such as supporting journalist associations and countering hate speech and disinformation.
- Digital Rights: Advocating for a safe and accessible digital space for citizens through campaigns like #KeepItOn, #KeepItSafe, and research exploring the impact of internet shutdowns.
- Governance and Democratization: Monitoring and reporting on the progress of democratization by regional and federal administrations through the annual Awramba Index.
Navigating Challenges with Resilience
The past five years have not been without obstacles. CARD has confronted a complex political and social landscape, including state emergencies, regional conflicts, and the global pandemic. These challenges, however, have only strengthened the organization's resolve to fulfill its mission.
A New Chapter Begins
As CARD celebrates its achievements, it also embarks on a new chapter with the appointment of a new Director, Dr. Moges Demissie, and new leadership for the Programs and Finance & Administration departments - Mengistu Assefa and Eyersalem Yoseph, respectively. The outgoing senior management team, comprising Befekadu Hailu and Addisalem Gobena will remain involved in program and finance & admin strategic advisory capacity until December, ensuring a smooth and seamless transition.
Looking Forward with Optimism
CARD extends its deepest gratitude to all partners, stakeholders, and its dedicated staff for their unwavering support throughout its journey. The organization remains committed to its vision and, under the guidance of its new leadership, is confident in its ability to continue advancing human rights and democracy in Ethiopia.
