You Can Now Download CARD's Handbook for Journalists Safety in Amharic and Afaan Oromoo
The Center for the Advancement of Rights and Democracy (CARD), with support from the International Media Support, publishes a safety guide handbook for journalists in Ethiopia in Amharic and Afaan Oromoo languages.
The handbook was developed by practicing journalists Fasika Tadesse and Dawit Endeshaw, who mapped the on-the-job risks of journalists as well as the means of mitigating them.
While the safety concerns for journalists and media workers have evolved in nature and sophistication linked to technological advancements as well as changes in the socio-political and security landscape, the readiness to address these concerns remains unimproved. With the advent of the digital world, threats have also expanded to the online sphere while offline challenges persist. On the other hand, given the decentralized violence and growing negative public sentiment toward journalism and journalists, the sources of threats for the professionals and the profession are diversifying from time to time. However, the threats against journalists keep on diversifying, the practicing journalists do not have the necessary tools and skills to protect themselves. Hence, published in Amharic and Afaan Oromoo languages, the handbook will help journalists as a guideline to prepare for the potential risks while on assignment. The handbook is believed to contribute to the overall quality of journalism in Ethiopia as one of the factors limiting journalists from conducting in-depth investigations is safety concerns.
