Call for a Consultant Researcher for a Study on Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in Ethiopia
Background and Objectives
The Center for the Advancement of Rights and Democracy (CARD), in collaboration with Deutsche Welle Akademie (DWA), is seeking a qualified research consultant to conduct a comprehensive study on the level of media and information literacy (MIL) in Ethiopia. The objective of this study is to fill the existing knowledge gap by assessing the MIL levels among the youth in Ethiopia. The study will also aim to map the civil society organizations (CSOs) and stakeholders working on initiatives to raise media and information literacy in the country.
Scope of Work
The study will focus on four administrative units in Ethiopia, namely Oromia, Amhara, Tigray, and Addis Ababa. The research consultant will be responsible for designing and implementing a methodology that combines both quantitative and qualitative analysis. The data collection process will involve desk research reviews, general assessments, key informant interviews, focused group discussions, online surveys, and a validation workshop.
Requirements
Master's degree in information systems, journalism and communications, media studies, policy, or a related field
Proven experience in conducting research studies, preferably in the field of media and information literacy or related areas
Strong understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies
Familiarity with Ethiopia’s political context, media landscape, and information literacy initiatives
Excellent analytical and report writing skills
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
Expected Deliverables
A comprehensive study report on media and information literacy level as well as a map of stakeholders who are working to raise MIL in Ethiopia (about 25 pages).
Inception report including methodology and research plan for data collection (to be submitted within 2 weeks of task commencement).
First draft research report (including executive summary, methodology, literature review, findings, analysis, conclusions, and recommendations) in English (to be submitted within three weeks after submission of the inception report. The paper will be reviewed by CARD.
Final draft of the research – after incorporating CARD’s comments, if any.
Presentation of research findings for validation/invalidation event to be organized by CARD
Summary of key findings (2 pages)
