After the CARD Fact-Checking Team identified the claim, the team verified it through online research and reverse image searches. The team found that the video was not recent. It was an excerpt from an interview given by Brigadier General Tesfaye Ayalew to the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) on August 24, 2022, regarding the war in northern Ethiopia, nearly four years before the claim was shared.
The Wollo People's Democratic Party was one of the political parties that competed in Ethiopia's 7th general election. Originating from the Amhara Region, the party operated from Dessie and contested elections in several regions, including the Addis Ababa Regional Council constituency.
The Kucha constituency is located in Gamo Zone, South Ethiopia Regional State. During the seventh general election, it became one of the most disputed areas, with a number of political parties competing in the region, including the Kucha People's Democratic Party, the Prosperity Party, and others.
It has been one month since the election took place and 12 days since the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) announced the official results. Since then, post election claims have continued to circulate, especially in southern Ethiopia, where the elections were more contested than in other parts of the country.
