CARD Participates in Launch of Report on Tech-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence in Ethiopia

The Center for Advancement of Rights and Democracy (CARD) joined the Centre for Information Resilience (CIR) and the Ethiopian Human Rights Defenders Center (EHRDC) and other women and digital rights CSOs yesterday, May 9th, 2024, for the launch of a critical report on Tech-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence in Ethiopia (TFGBV Ethiopia), conducted by CIR.

The report launch, held at the Eliana Hotel in Addis Ababa, featured various discussions and an exhibition where civil society organizations (CSOs) working on related issues showcased their efforts. CARD, through its Digital Rights program focused on digital equity and user safety, participated as an exhibitor.

CARD's participation aligns with its ongoing campaign, #KeepItSafe, which advocates for a safe online space for everyone. As part of the exhibition, CARD conducted a survey revealing a concerning statistic: 78% of women who have experienced TFGBV do not report the incident.

In addition to the survey, CARD distributed brochures offering information on TFGBV and strategies to counter it.

CARD's participation in this important event underscores CARD's commitment to promoting digital rights and safety for all Ethiopians. The survey's finding on the under-reporting of TFGBV is alarming and highlight the urgent need for collective action to combat online violence against women and minorities.
